Calling all wheel nerds

I need some help here... it's about that time to order wheels and although I've finally found the PERFECT wheel for this project, I'm not sure what to get in terms of tire size etc etc.

I can go two routes here as the wheels in question only come in two sizes:

15x6 +38 or +44
17x7 +38 or +44

Now, the shite part is 15's are almost too small and 17's are almost too big. If I run 17's I'll have to go low profile tires but if I go with 15's I want to try something different and go with a taller sidewall to mimick the oldschool bobber harleys (remember, this build is all about vintage... see figure 1)

Figure 1

Soooo, I need help, can any of you faithful readers help with tire suggestions as well as suggestions for the ET's? Maybe provide pictures of similiar setups? I'm assuming no one has really done the taller sidewall thing as that is frowned upon on the tex but if anyone HAS done it with say, a winter wheel setup, pics of that would be great as well.

Thanks for the help folks!

Y'know what's funny, back when I saw Pixar's Cars for the first time, I totally thought I wanted to get balloon tires with acual whitewalls and retro aspherical hub caps. If done right, I think the balloon tire things could look killer. But it'll look retarded unless it's a 100% exaggerated look. The taller sidewall isn't what's gonna make it. It's the roundness of the sidewall that'll make it rule.

As for the 15 vs. 17 debate, I have a feeling it'll be easier to pull off with the 17's...but the 15's might be the gamble that pays off with more oomph.

And if you do the 15's, you're really gonna have to keep those balloon tires looking BLACK. Like, black-black. Not tire-shiney, but "dressed." Cause dirty-greasy balloon tires on a mk3 is just gonna make it look ratty.

I know exactly what wheel you are going with!! Go with the 17 inch to show off the detail. Mehr_psi

i understand the look your going for, but with 17s wouldnt the tires end up rubbing? 16s would be perfect for it if not 15's. I may or may not be understanding your idea completely

I thinking that you might want to go with 15" after thinking about the look your going for. I love the wheels that I am pretty sure your going with :). Mehr_psi

Go with small mesh rims and stretched rubber. You cannot be more old school than that ;)

without seeing the wheels in question its hard to say. et38 will definately be a better route, and you'll still probably want to space them out a hair.
in 17" you've got a great tire option in the 195/40/17 from continental, but its not very vintage.
in 15" there are plenty of tire options, and you may even want to consider running bike tires, just check the load rating on them.
