New interior pics

Tuesday, May 27, 2008 by JKREW

Seeing as how we have never posted any interior pics of Roxy up, seems about darn time I suppose. Kate had a wild hair to go shoot outside tonight and wandered over to Roxy after the sun had gone down.

Anyways, not too shabby for a n00b car shooter I think.

Here are the new doors I've been working on this past month. I tried to replicate the old 1973 Carrera RS door pull straps out of some climbing rope/strap, some 22g aluminum sheet and went from there. Special thanks to Kate for putting up with me cutting aluminum sheet in the den at 10 at night with a sabre saw and sheet metal blade btw...

I then drilled 18 holes in my doors, used my new threaded insert gun (BEST TOOL EVAR) and attached the panel by way of some industrial hex screws and finishing washers. Even though I thought I had a fairly straight hand when cutting, the edges were still not perfect so Kate suggested we use the lil door jam strips you can get at the local parts store as a simple way of cleaning up the edges. Normally I frown on those things because I think they're sort of trashy/cheap and that I didn't want to combine 4 stripes to surround the panel because they weren't long enough. But as luck would have it, I found some strips for trucks that were 4' long and totally did the trick without any visible breaks around the perimeter.

I also wanted to add the alarm LED to the car but didn't want it to be seen so I got one of those super bright ones from ebay. I drilled a 1/32" hole in the door and hot glued the LED so it was flush and hidden in the day with the aluminum but totally visible at night when it was blinking.

Here's some of the dash. Basic textured cabby dash swap, nos Momo steering wheel and my grandpops airplane gauge in the foreground. The popup gauge in the speaker panel can be hiden by way of linear actuator attached to the base of it.

notsoraremetaljetta: i used over a half can on touch up
didnt redo all of it just peeled some up and hit both surfaces hard
when it initially stuck it felt a lot more secure than the first time
jkrew: haha
haha I wonder if pulling it up made it weak?
notsoraremetaljetta: i have no idea
im losing patience though
at least ive got getting it out down to a science
jkrew: is it easy to remove in a jetta?
notsoraremetaljetta: it aint bad
twist it and pull it out the back door
jkrew: I am so quoting that
notsoraremetaljetta: get yer mind outta the gutta krew

Roxy picked up second place. I told her second place was just the first loser. She better step it up for the next show or else...

And purty Dara for good measure.

More crap done

Friday, May 23, 2008 by JKREW

Alarm is all done. Power locks, siren, glass sensor blah blah blah. All I wanted was power locks but wired everything else in for the f of it.

Took lil Roxy out tonight to drive 'er around a bit after sitting for close to a week or two and had a blast =) Man I'm glad I'm finally enjoying her. Some diamond star rolled on me on the freeway and I had some fun. Other than the exhaust, she is definitely a clean little sleeper at night haha

Tomorrow I button her and Dara up for the first show of the summer. Not sure what I need to do to finish her but I think she is good to go for now.

Ok so updates

by JKREW

So, this update will contain no pictures because I am quite positive Kate has stolen the camera she gave to me as a present (damnit woman!) so it's all going to be semi-descriptive paragraphs that I hope you all have the power to imagine with great detail.

1. so the fuel tank/sub box needed some lines and I'm cheap and can't afford ansi lines or whatever they're called so I went to depot and bought some braided lines for a gas grill at $4 per and they look pretty damn close to professional ones (that actually deliver fuel instead of bass). I ran them to my fuel pump cover so they sort of look legit now. Cool.

2. door cards are done and thanks to Kate, I found some door edging for trucks that are like 4' long and lined the edges of the panels to clean them up a lot. They look DOPE now.

3. the door cards haven't been installed yet because of many reasons. A) I don't want to cut holes for a window switch, mirror switch (which I think I won't even use because power mirrors are for chumps) and an alarm LED. SO, I had to find a method of moving a window switch to the dash. Oh hai! Use a Jetta rear window switch... brilliant!

4. Jetta rear window switch swap... PAIN IN MY ASA. It has taken me close to four hours of time just to figure this one out. For one, the GTI switch has 6 pins and two resistors, the Jetta has 8 and no resistors. The GTI's door jam wiring loom isn't one of the simple oldschool tunnels that go through the door and the body, it's a twist together coupler and as luck would have it, the wire colors change at the intersection. Wonderful.

So I got it all working last night but when the key was out, both switches, up and down, would cause the windows to go down only. Great. So we got some dinner where I obsessed about the switch through the entire meal and finally got back when it was dark and proceeded to wire the switch all over again by way of cordless shop light. For two hours.

But I got it working so booyeah.

5. plumbed boost gauge.

6. fixed gauge holder and linear actuator that got ruined in the florida sun while down south.

7. attempted to clean up the bay but after popping the hood, looking at the bay for five solid minutes, I shut the hood and went upstairs and surfed the net.

Pics soon.

Kate got a stupid new camera...

Random-ass updates part II

by JKREW

So Roxy is going to be a booth bitch. I sort of entered her jokingly a few weeks back thinking I didn't have a shot in hell but she got picked and now I have a deadline (doh). But I'm super super humbled and more importantly stoked that she was chosen and am now in panic mode to get her ready to be shown.

So that means her busted ass headliner needs to be recovered again...

Then I bought a threaded nut insert gun (which is the greatest tool I've ever boughten (yes thats a word). If you haven't had the pleasure, it's pretty much a rivet gun that rivets in a threaded casing that allows you to screw bolts into. Sweet right?

So I got to drillin'

And finally got to install her hand made battery tray which looks sweeeeet

Oh and made some door panels ;)

And then the gals went to a GTG (random)

I'm old

by JKREW

So I am in the process of making door panels. All was well Wednesday, I went to work, came home all excited to put in some car time etc etc. I had some 20g aluminum sheet cut for me and after trimming it to size with a jigsaw, I brought a sheet down to Roxy to test fit and cut the door pull openings.

I took this shot...

And then took this one...

And as soon as I tried to stand up... BAMMMM! my fooking back gave out. Like, worst pain I've ever felt kind of giving out. I fell to the ground and screamed like a little girl, realized that I was the only one home and I had no idea what was going on and just sort of sat there for a few minutes trying to figure out what I was going to do.

I managed to make it to the front door of the building and literally crawled up three flights of stairs (not the first time I'd done this due to a medical emergency mind you) and got into bed and thats where I sat for 4 hours.

Kate came home to take care of me and I pretty much sat in bed on my back for the next 24 hours.

I'm old. This sucks. Hard.

p.s. You can see Dara in those pics so there you go haha =p
